Are allergic diseases and internalizing and externalizing behaviours in children related? A cross-sectional study

Introduction The prevalence of allergies in children has grown last few decades. Allergies are very often associated with physical, mental, and emotional problems that could be detected through child’s behaviour feelings. Objectives to describe compare children’s (internalizing externalizing) across a sample aged 6–11 years without allergic diseases. Methods This was cross-sectional observational case-control study. A survey 366 families (194 cases 172 controls), including child checklist (CBCL) socio-demographic questionnaire questions related family, school education, health conditions allergy symptoms, administered. Results Children diagnosis showed higher scores the overall CBCL score (standardised mean differences [SMD]= 0.47; confidence intervals [CI]: 0.26–0.68) internalizing externalizing factors (SMD=0.52 SMD=0.36, respectively) than non-allergic children. Odds ratio (OR) analyses risk (OR=2.76; 95% CI [1.61 4.72]) developing behavioural difficulty diagnosed allergies. Age level asthma appear as modulatory variables. Conclusions larger relationship is stronger behaviours. These findings suggest importance attending them treating early stages avoid future psychological disorders.
